ABOUT DZONGKHAG AGRCIULTURE SECTOR, CHHUKHA
The agricultural sector operates under the administrative supervision of the Dzongkhag and the technical supervision and guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture. The Dzongkhag covers an area of 1,879.32 square kilometers with an elevation ranging from 200 to 4,480 meters divided into 11 Gewogs (Chapcha, Bjachho, Bongo, Getena, Geling, Dungna, Maedtabkha, Logchina, Dala, Sampheling and Phuntsholing), 58 Chewogs, a Dungkhag and Thromdey.
According to the 2017 PHCB, there were 16,075 households, 123 villages and a population of 70,057 people. In terms of manpower, Chhukha ranks 3rd among the 20 Dzongkhag with 24,208 active workers. With a forest cover of 82.38%, the Dzongkhag has rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. As in any other part of the country, the main sources of income for the people are agriculture and animal husbandry. The Dzongkhag has a total of 2,303.23 acres of wetlands, 18,709.05 acres of dry land and 1,838.63 acres of orchards. There are 620.92 km of farm roads and 210.14 km of irrigation canals.
The climatic condition of the Dzongkhag varies from hot and wet subtropical in southern part to cool and dry temperate climate in northern part that favors the cultivation of both summer and winter crops. The commonly grown cereal crops in the country are paddy, maize, wheat, barley, buckwheat and millet. The main cash crops at Dzongkhag are mandarin, potatoes, cardamom, ginger and vegetables. The cultivation of buckwheat, millet and upland paddy is increasing every year to achieve food security.
