Damchu-Chhukha Bypass opened to traffic

18 July 2018

The GoI funded Damchu-Chhukha bypass project which began in 2010 is officially opened to traffic today after it was inaugurated by Lyonchen Tshering Tobgay. The road is short by 19KM compared to the old zhunglam, whereby the travellers can save fuel and time. The normal drive of 5 hours from Thimphu to Phuentsholing will be reduced by an hour. The Tanalung bridge which spans over 145M is known to be the longest bridge on Phuntsholing-Thimphu highway.

Lyonchen said the road will remain as a reminder for the strong friendship between India and Bhutan. The officers from DANTAK also shared on how some of their workers lost their life to this work.

The double lane road is aspected to benefit the truckers since the road is much more wider and meanwhile the road being away from the Tsimasham, hoteliers are worried about their business as only the local residents are aspected to use the old route.

However, the Dzongkhag Administration would like to wish all the travellers a pleasant and safe drive.
